Currency
Exchange:
Be
careful when exchanging money in Russia.
Do not change money on the street as there
is no need and the risks are too great.
Always change money in a bank or currency
exchange office, or use one of the numerous
cash machines. In the past few years cash
machine fraud, where account and PIN information
is electronically stolen, has become prominent,
so it is safest to use cash machines inside
banks. Currency exchange offices are called
"obmyen balooti," and they usually
advertise their rates in their windows.
There are plenty of them in the big cities
and their rates tend to be better than in
banks. When it comes to travelers cheques
American Express and Thomas Cook are the
most widely accepted, and there are now
offices in all the major cities where you
can exchange them for cash.
Credit
Cards:
Mastercard,
VISA and American Express are widely accepted
in all the major cities. However, in the
hinterlands they are less widely used and
cash is the preferred method of payment.
Banks:
The
banking hours in Russia vary from bank to
bank but generally they are Monday to Saturday
10:00 am to 6:00 or 8:00 pm.
