USD10,000 or equivalent in cash or cheques
must be declared to customs.

Currency
Exchange:
Most
exchange houses and banks do not levy additional
fees to cash traveler's checks or exchange
foreign currency but be sure to read the
small print as many will try to tack on
a commission to an unsuspecting tourist.
Some banks will only exchange money if you
hold a Mexican bank account, so it is best
to sort out your currency needs before you
go. Many of the bigger cities and towns
and the ‘border’ towns will
accept US dollars as a method of payment.
Credit
Cards:
Major
credit and debit cards are accepted at most
hotels, shops, restaurants and travel service
providers in Mexico. Your purchases will
charged in Pesos, and your bank will convert
the amount back to the equivalent in the
local currency where your account is held
and charge it to your account. Occasionally
your bank may levy additional charges be
sure to check before you travel. If the
store you visit uses the old style carbon
copy imprinter system be sure to destroy
the middle copy for your own safety. If
you are taking a ‘maestro’ card
be sure to check with your issuing bank
before you go as many Mexican cash machines
will not accept these cards.
Banks:
The
banking hours in Mexico are generally Mon-Fri
0900-1700; some banks are open Saturday
afternoon.
