Currency
The
Euro (EUR) is now the official currency
of Italy. Italy’s prior currency,
the Italian Lira, has now been phased out
as legal tender and is no longer accepted.
Credit
Cards
MasterCard,
Visa and Eurocheque cards are widely accepted
throughout Italy. All establishments that
accept credit cards show the VISA or Mastercard
logo in their windows.
Traveller's
cheques
Travelers
checks are accepted in all major cities
and tourist areas, except in some very small
establishments. To avoid additional exchange
rate charges, it is best to take Euro travelers
cheques.
Currency
Regulations
If
you intend to bring an amount of currency
exceeding Eur10,000, currency import restrictions
may apply. In particular, the amount may
have to be declared and validated in Italy
upon arrival. Check with the Italian embassy
in your home country before departure for
more details.
